OIDS 2.0 is described as “melding elements of games like Choplifter, Asteroids, Defender, Lode Runner and Lunar Lander.” When it was first released in 1990, the game earned a five mice rating from Macworld magazine. The last version before this release was 1.4, made back in 1991.
Improvements in OIDS 2.0 include:

- Pack Canoe Buyers Guide. What is a pack canoe, you might ask? The name gives it away. It's a short, lightweight solo canoe that's designed to rest easily on the shoulders and 'pack' its way on an expedition that is seldom reached or requires as much portaging as paddling. And, yes, pack canoes are solo boats.
- We recommend two per canoe but each canoe can accommodate three. 4 to 6 hour trips. Trips vary between 5-15 miles daily depending on river height and paddling consistency. For our more adventurous river traveler, we offer our canoe trips. Beginners can definitely canoe but should reserve a flat water section.
- These labs provide access to both Mac OS and Windows-based devices. Student Laptop Requirement. Lander’s computer labs are up to date and ready to meet student needs; however, students will have additional needs outside of the computer lab for academic assignments.
Xavagus Prime Software is part-time shareware business created by Kirk Baker, an experienced game programmer with fifteen years of experience (currently looking for work) whose past credits include the original commercial release of OIDS, as well as Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep, Courier Crisis and Beavis and Butthead. He also worked on the CD-ROM and DVD versions of the acclaimed Encyclopedia Britannica. Baker acquired the rights to OIDS, has updated it, and released the game as shareware.
Recently Baker dropped MacCentral a line to let readers know of his new effort. He’s proud of his new creation, and said, “OIDS has turned out really well. It is very smooth on fast Macs even with huge resolutions (one tester reported getting 76 fps at 1920×1600 resolution on a Dual 800 PowerMac G4).”
Baker added that OIDS High Scores list records both all-time and monthly high scores. “… people who aren’t OIDS pros can get their scores on the list (at least at the beginning of the month),” he said.
System requirements call for a PowerPC-based Mac (G3 or better recommended) running Mac OS 7.x through Mac OS 9.x. OIDS can run as a Classic application under Mac OS X, but running in Mac OS 9.x is recommended for optimal performance.
